The Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas

About Us

Dr. Anthony Asher and Dr. Jim Palermo

OUR MISSION

 Our Principal Goals:

 1. To heighten public awareness of brain tumors and their impact on society

2. To encourage collaborative research designed to advance the care of brain tumor patients

3. To provide support to brain tumor patients and their families through education and care coordination

The BTFC is committed to facilitating the development of strategic cooperative relationships between traditional academic and community brain tumor programs. In that regard, the BTFC will provide support each year to important basic science and clinical research efforts involving local brain tumor clinicians and leading university centers. By encouraging clinicians in a variety of practice settings to combine their unique resources, the BTFC seeks to create opportunities for the development of novel treatment options for brain tumor patients and their families.

The Patient Navigator

In addition to supporting brain cancer patients through vital research, The Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas provides financial support for "Brain Tumor Navigators". Navigators are nurse clinicians who are employed by the Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates (CNSA) and work with all affiliated brain tumor caregivers in the Charlotte region.

The primary role of the Navigators is to facilitate precise coordination of care between multiple specialists responsible for the treatment of individual brain tumor patients. They also provide patient outreach and education, direct patient care in the hospital and in outpatient clinics, interact with rehabilitation services and hospice, and perform clinical research.   For more information on this program, please contact Traci DeFelice at braintumorfund@carolina.rr.com or at 704.635.8643.
